Electronic catalogue of acquisitions in Korean at the Russian Academy of Sciences Library

Project Overview

Name of Institution: Russian Academy of Sciences Library (RASL)

Applicant Institution:  Asia and Africa Publications Department

Applicant Library : Library of the Institute of Oriental Studies (Department of RASL)

Title of Project: Electronic catalogue of acquisitions in Koreanat the Russian Academy of Sciences Library

Description of Project. Electronic catalogues of Korean books and serials are the first attempt of our both Departments to make the electronic version of catalogue of full stocks in any languages in original graphics.

Before the grant of Korea Foundation we had only card catalogues and electronic catalogues of Japanese and Chinese magazines in transcriptions. We have card catalogues of Korean languages books and serials – alphabetical, topographic and systematic.

Electronic catalogues have to unit all this catalogues in one convent to our readers and librarians for further works. For making electronic catalogues we usedthe system named IRBIS- Format IRBIS 64, the System of libraries automation of the Russian State Public Sciences Technical Library. This System works with formats Rusmarc/Unimarc/Marc21 for ISO-files, the multi-languages provided with UNICODE.

We used card catalogues of Korean books and serials and we reviewed all books de-visu.

Each Department has their own system of press-marks. For the Library of the Institute of Oriental Studies the press-mark for all Korean issues is “OK”, single OK means periodicals, OK with the letters “I”, “K”, “L”, “M” – in Cyrillic means the formats of books. For the Asia and Africa Publications Department – “kor” in Cyrillic for all Korean issues, the letters “I”, “K”, “L” – the formats of books, ciphers means the year of entering in the RASL and the quantity of the books of these format in the year of entering. We preserved these systems of press-mark for providing uniformity of cards and electronic catalogues.

There are some differences in the descriptions of books in our both departments. Asian and Africa Publications Department uses Russian transcription for the Korean language makes translation into Russian.

The Library of the Institute of Oriental Studies as specialized scientific library never used transcription and translation in any languages for the description of oriental books.

But for electronic catalogue of Korean books we decided to do Russian translation of Korean titles or brief annotation if the literal translation is not enough.

During the year of working both our departments were making two electronic catalogues for each Korean language book stocks. At the Library of the Institute of Oriental Studies new entering of Korean books and serials are included into electronic catalogue, the Asia and Africa Publications Department now prepares to start electronic descriptions of new Korean books.

Participants:
Osadchuk
Dmitrij Yevgenyevich instead of Andreyeva Polina Vladimirovna, Asia and Africa Publications Department at the RASL,

Project Director Poumpian Galina Zakharovna, Head of the Asia and Africa Publication Department of RASL till 1 mart 2007.Vinogradova Tatiana Igorevna, Library of the Institute of Oriental Studies,

Project Director Wojewodzki Igor Nickolaevich, Chief librarian of the Library of the Institute of Oriental Studies, RASL. Since 1 mart 2007 Dr. Vinogradova is the Head of the Asia and Africa Publications Department, but she continued working with Korean books at the Library of the Institute of Oriental Studies.

Though we received cash only 10 May 2006 and we start working later than planning, we were tried to finish our catalogues in project period.

Evaluation of the Project. The main goal of the project was to create electronic version of card catalogues o

f Korean books and serials in the both oriental departments of RASL. We have made two CD-ROMS with data-base of acquisitions in Korean suitable for Internet access, printed bibliographies and further work with new Korean books. The system we have used gives possibility for editing and improvement of bibliographical descriptions. We demonstrated our electronic catalogues to the scholars of the Korean Group of the Institute of Oriental Studies and we receive their high appraisal.

Now all acquisitions in Korean except newspapers in RASL are computerizing.

The history of two Korean collections in RASL is different. The Library of the Institute of Oriental Studies is the part of former Asiatic Museum founded in 1818, the Asia and Africa Publications Department of RASL is founded in 1953. Both departments have different aims of acquisition.

The Library of the Institute of Oriental Studies has stocks concerning classical Korean history, literature, language and culture, the Asia and Africa Publications Department of RASL has not only books in humanities but also technical and natural sciences Korean books published recently. One of the problems of Korean books stokes of our departments is a huge numbers of the issues of Korean Peoples Democratic Republic.

At the Library of the Institute of Oriental Studies the most propagandist North Korean books were expelled during the inventory of 1970-80 years, now we continue this work to choose only books concerning history and literature. The Asia and Africa Publications Department of RASL decided to include all the North Korean books in electronic catalogue.

In the process of computerization we have précised the size of our Korean collections.  The number of Korean magazines in the Asia and Africa Publications Department of RASL is lager than we thought before – 12492 instead of planning 8600 (254 titles). The size of Korean language of the Library of the Institute of Oriental Studies is – 2882. The Asia and Africa Publications Department of RASL created two data-bases – monographs and periodicals, the Library of the Institute of Oriental Studies united monograph and periodicals in one data-base.

In the Library of the Institute of Oriental Studies we choose duplet exemplars to separate stock, there are also dictionaries, encyclopedias and the main issues of Korean classical monuments in the reference library of Korean Group of the Institute, these issues are also included in our electronic catalogue.

Since we have finished the electronic catalogues of our Korean books we are certain that the number of our readers, students in particular increased and we can improve the quality of service. Our experience of electronic cataloguing of books in Korean now is unique in St-Petersburg and we are ready to help other St-Petersburg libraries, i.e. the Center of Korean Language and Culture of the St-Petersburg State University and the manuscript department of the Institute of Oriental Studies to make similar catalogues.

So our work can unite all St-Petersburg libraries which have books in Korean in their effort to do modern catalogues. Now we prepared our electronic catalogues for the web-site of the Russian Academy of Sciences Library – .

The areas of highest demand by library users are the traditional Korean culture, art and classical literature, i.e. the books received from Korea Foundation. The books on technical and natural sciences in Korean are less demandable.

Suggestions for the Foundation

We are planning now to continue our work with Korea related materials of our Library. We hope we can do electronic catalogue of the books about Korea in Russian and western languages, and probably in Japanese and Chinese.

At the Library of the Institute of Oriental Studies we have not large but very interesting collection of newspapers in Korean published in the Soviet Far East in 1920-1930th. The physical condition of these rare issues now is very bad, so it will be better to make its electronic copies.

So we hope that our cooperation with Korea Foundation will be continued.
